“I feel like I am always running late. I wake up in the morning and usually scrunch some Bumble and Bumble cream in my hair, throw on some makeup and run out the door. I always put on sunscreen before I leave though. I like La Roche-Posay, it’s the best. I use two different types of mascara. I am a big drugstore mascara fan. With pigments, like lipsticks and concealers, I go NARS, but for mascara I’m into Maybelline Great Lash. I go through it so quickly and it works so well. I put on one coat of thinner mascara first, then drink a cup of coffee and then put on another coat of Maybelline. It makes my eyelashes look larger which is crazy, but it works much better than using two coats of the same mascara. I use Bare Minerals foundation because it’s simple And my eyebrows are kind of their own little monsters. I don’t really do anything to them. Occasionally, I’ll go and get them threaded if I’m looking seriously Groucho Marx. But I’m into the Brooke Shields eyebrow look, so usually I’ll just brush them out..”

“I like to wear lipstick a lot. I love Mulberry by Laura Mercier. The color is perfect for the day; a deep red stain. It looks natural, like you’ve just been drinking wine all morning. It’s a nice way to start the day. I got into Funny Face by NARS, too. I am a total NARS junkie. I’ve loved them forever, all their colors!”

“Before I go to bed at night I use a small amount of retinol cream and Egyptian Magic. You put it on before you go to bed at night and it’s amazing. My mom got this eye cream off the Home Shopping Network called Glymed. It’s so hilarious, but it works amazingly. The packaging is awful but it’s like rubbing a cloud underneath your eyes. I still use that. I have yet to find a better eye cream than Glymed, oddly. That’s it really. I’m pretty simple with my beauty routine. I don’t really have the time to get so crazy with it. I stick to the basics.”

“I am not such a beauty girl. I am very natural; I think I am very French for this. At the same time I am a woman and a Beauty Editor so I have to test some stuff [laughs]. When I wake up the first thing I love to do is spray rosewater on my face. Afterwards I have a green tea then take a shower. I have sensitive skin so for my face I use a lot of La Roche-Posay and Avène—more pharmaceutical products.  For my body I can try everything. I love the smells and textures. I take the time to nourish my skin with lots of Clarins Sérum Corps Peau Neuve it’s  my basic and afterwards I use Aesop.”

“I know American girls wash their hair everyday but I can’t. Since I was young I’ve been told that if I wash my hair everyday it will be too dry so I wash it every other day. I put a lot of oil in my hair before I shampoo it. I’m a Mediterranean woman, from the French Riviera so I love oil. I use the Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo with coconut. I love Kerastase and the brands of L’Oreal Professional. Shu Uemura Art of Hair products have great texture and smell nice. After I wash my hair I use a serum like the one from David Mallet or an Aveda cream for texture so I don’t look like a big head of hair. I never use any blow dryers though. I think when you have curly hair you need to come as you are. In France we have a sentence that means if you want to forget your natural way it will come back fast and strong.”

“I love to wear some splash after I nourish my skin. Tom Ford’s Neroli Portofino is amazing. I use so many because for me it is a very feminine and important gesture. It is not so much about the smell because the scents  are very subtle.”

“I only wear a little makeup. I don’t use a foundation, just some powder from Givenchy, Croisière . Now that it is summer I have some tan so I try to keep it. Afterwards I add pink because it can look too brown otherwise with the bronzer. I don’t like eye shadow or eyeliner so much because afterwards I can be a mess like a girl coming home with everything all over. I use a lot of black mascara by La Roche-Posay. I have very sensitive eyes and this one is very gentle. Sometimes I put blue pencil around my eyes just to change it up, but if I don’t use this blue, I use nothing. I think black looks hard on me. At the end of the day if I’m going to a party I’ll wear lipstick. I like a good matte lipstick with a lot of color like MAC Lady Danger. For the day I prefer something more sweet, with color but not too strong.”

“The last thing I do before I leave the house is apply real perfume. I love No.19 by Chanel. I have had it since I was seventeen. It is my first and my all and my everything, my first love [laughs]. Sometimes I use L’eau Froide, by Serge Lutens it means cold water. It is very special because when you smell it, it is very cold but it is hot at the same time.”

“I wake up in the morning and have my green tea which I think is good for my skin. Then I start putting my Avène, it’s like a fresh water. Then I clean myself and use my cream of Avène. I was not using Avène before but it was recommended and I like the smell.”

“I am a big big fan of perfumes, my best are: Annick Goutal, Jo Malone, Diptyque and Creed. I have all the different kinds but I never use commercial ones. I always try to look for something very special, perfumes avec des fleurs. I just found a new one that I like with white flowers. I change them a lot because I like to go back and smell them. It’s like a film, it reminds you of everything, the person, how, where-it’s funny. I love that.”

“I like the Laura Mercier concealer because it comes in a box with two colors. Since my skin is a little bit dry I use another one that is more creamy from the pharmacy, La Roche Posay. I use a bit of black on my eyes, but very natural. I’m not so much about mascara, just on stage. I use the Burberry one they offered me. I try to be very natural, never looking like I have too much on.”

“Sometimes during the day I wear lipstick but at night I always wear lipstick. I use CHANEL, which I love and I really like the smell of their lipsticks. I’m using also MAC, which stays on all night long because it’s makeup for shows — that’s what I use on stage.”

“I use Bioderma to take off my makeup at night and then Avène spray again. I use some special stuff from the dermatologist, but I don’t even know what is it, but it burns [laughs]. I also use a cream which is pretty crazy, it’s for when your skin is being bad. It’s not really working right now, because I’ve been drinking a lot of wine [laughs].  Then I go to bed and hope that when I wake up something’s going to happen.”

“I wake up in the morning and hop in the shower. I usually just tie my hair back and only wash my bangs, which is really funny to most people [laughs]. Then I blow dry my bangs and flat iron them. In the shower I use the Clarisonic–I’m kind of obsessed with it. My friend gave it to me for Christmas and told me it was going to change my life and he was right.”

“My skin care routine is pretty intense. If my skin is in a bad place I use the Vichy Normaderm Deep Cleansing Gel, but if it’s looking good I use the  Jurlique Balancing Foaming Cleanser. I do a Vichy toner and a layer of serums. I started getting facials done at Ling Skin Care and they are genius, these women are so good! They are really hard-core and gave me two serums to use at home. One is for hyperpigmentation called Clearlight and then the most amazing product of them all is the Oxygen Plasma Serum, it’s good for unclogging pores and for anti-aging—it’s kind of a dream serum. So I use the serums and then put on my moisturizer. I have one for the summer the Vichy Aqualia Hydrating Lotion, which is light and non greasy. In the winter I use Toleriane by La Roche-Posay. It’s super hydrating and leaves the skin with a nice texture. I use the Vichy eye cream afterwards. Keeping your under eye area moisturized is very important, it’s the thinnest skin on your body and is the first to go.”

“I’ve been doing the same makeup on myself for a while now. I just do concealer where needed, (Laura Mercier, Secret Camouflage). I then use the Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder on top of that, as needed, on my T-Zone. I put the Smolder MAC Eye Kohl in the waterline of my eyes top and bottom. Next I do a little more of the pencil underneath the eyes. Then I set it with a bit of Carbon black MAC eyeshadow to give it that messy smudgy effect. I keep the focus underneath my eyes because my bangs are super long. So you can’t really see the top of my lids. I finish off the eyes with mascara top and bottom with L’Oréal Voluminous.”

“You can never see my eyebrows [laughs] but I tweeze them religiously nonetheless. In case the wind blows my bangs off my face, I don’t want to have bushy eyebrows under there!”

“I find it really fun to take the time out and paint my own nails. I’ve been doing white for a while. I usually do one color per season. I did fluorescent yellow all summer. I just like the idea of being seen with one color it’s like an accessory. I’m never going to be seen in a traditional color, I kind of like things that are a little bit off. This looks like whiteout to me so I really like it.”

“Every night before bed I take off my eye makeup with the Klorane eye makeup remover. It’s gentle and gets every last bit of black off of my eyes. With that being said, I cannot live without Swissper cotton pads.  That brand in particular is the best!  They are soft but don’t fall apart! Every so often before bed I use the Klorane eye patches, they are incredible!  They are soothing and softening and really do a great job de-puffing the eyes.”

“I use the Ling Pomegranate Detox Mask a couple of times a week. That is good for unclogging pores and clarifying the skin. I use the Icelandic Blue Lagoon Silica Mud Mask about once a week. It’s a really amazing exfoliating mask; once you remove it you immediately feel the texture of your skin change. You put it on and it dries down to a powdery finish and starts to flake off everywhere. I found out about it when I was on a job in Iceland. I got to swim in the Blue Lagoon and used the mud from the lagoon on my face. It was so amazing that I had to take some home with me! It’s pretty much the same, I mean it obviously feels better to use the mud from the Blue Lagoon itself while swimming around and drinking champagne, but its a close second!”

“I wear makeup for work all the time so I try hard to take care of my skin and also my hair. When I wake up in the morning I always clean my face no matter what. I use a bunch of different cleansers but I started using this Rare Minerals powder where you add water, Renew and Reveal. It exfoliates a bit and you use it with this brush. It really cleans my skin and makes it brighter. If it’s really sunny I use La Roche-Posay sunscreen, it’s really light and I can wear it under makeup. If I have a shoot I will put on the Embryolisse moisturizer. I noticed people backstage were putting it on so I tried it and it stuck. I have dry skin so just using the Bare Minerals alone can be a little bit drying.”

“I always need conditioner for my hair, it would be uncontrollable without it. I use a lot of Bed Head products. My hair takes forever to dry. It might be wet all day if I don’t blow dry it a little bit. I don’t know how to use a diffuser, it’s like some big contraption that sticks on there, and so I don’t mess with it. I talked to a hairstylist once who told me that a diffuser makes your hair more full but I don’t really need that.”

“People usually think I am Brazilian or Canadian. I guess Canadian because I don’t sound very American when I speak, I don’t know. As long as I don’t speak people think I’m Brazilian though. It takes them a long time to figure out my nationality. My mom is actually Jamaican-Chinese, she was born in Kingston but she grew up in New York pretty much. She moved when she was two. And my dad’s American but he’s Russian and German. Both sets of grandparents are very different. My grandma looks very Asian but she has a Jamaican accent and then that whole side is like very Jamaican. My other grandma speaks Russian, French, German, English and probably Italian.  She is very European.”

“I started using Bare Minerals powders, but just a little bit. I use medium beige with the brush. I’m scared of using too much makeup on my face and getting breakouts. For my dark circles I use Instant Light Brush-On Perfector by Clarins, which is similar to Touche Éclat. I use a lot of Clarins. It matches my skin pretty well, I think, and I use the Clarins eye makeup remover and face masks. For a bronzer I use a tan powder by Bare Minerals, I don’t really put pink on my cheeks, I’m not a blush girl. So I put on the tan powder as a contour mostly. I like to do up my eyes with eye shadow. If I’m going out I’ll probably use a gold color and some silver under my eyes. I have MAC and  Maybelline eye shadows that I usually wear. I can’t really do my makeup that well; I’m not really crafty with the whole eyeliner thing so I just don’t do it. I try to keep it natural and bronzy. Sometimes I’ll fill in my eyebrows or brush them out because I don’t have very much eyebrows. After that I may put a little bit of vaseline on my lips for a casting and some Bare Minerals mascara.  I’m not really big on mascara because my eyelashes are really curly so I don’t curl them. I just put a little bit of mascara maybe.”

“When I did the Chanel Couture show they did this amazing cat eye. Depending on the eye shape of each model, they used the Chanel black eyeliner and drew around the eyes to get this almond shaped Cleopatra look. I attempted it afterwards with my own things and it didn’t work out. But it was so good; I wish I could do it. I’m sure you can’t wear that everyday anyways unless you’re Daphne Guinness.”

“I think I have like six lipsticks in my bag right now. Sometimes when I am going out to brunch or during the day I’ll use Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss in 236. It has a little bit of shimmer, it sparkles but it’s not sticky. It’s kind of like a nude but with an extra punch. Sometimes I’ll wear red lipstick but I feel like it makes me look really old so it depends on where I am going. I’ll wear red lipstick for a Williamsburg party I guess. Oh and I do have the moisturizing lipstick that Chanel makes the one that’s just clear that’s great for castings.”

“I just graduated from high school, actually I graduated a bit early. I was doing correspondence the last few years. See I’ve gone to school my whole life and I got a Calvin Klein exclusive, my agency was like, “you’ll probably have to leave school.” I decided it was a once in a lifetime opportunity so I made the decision to transition out of my junior year, I left half way and I finished through correspondence. During fashion weeks I was always doing my homework instead of going to the parties, it wasn’t that fun, but now I’m all done. And so yeah, I get to have a little bit more fun now.”

“My routine always changes because I get so many products to try. I learned not to try every single product that I receive. I never tried anything that wasn’t for my skin type, but still trying so many different things can breakout my skin. For a while, I had to use products specifically designed for sensitive skin and even had to see a dermatologist. Now I know what my skin needs. Of course I try what brands send me because it’s my job and I need to write about them but I choose more carefully.”

“In the mornings I usually start with a gentle cleanser and I change my cleanser a lot, right now I am using one by Avene with my Clarasonic. I use the one with bristles for sensitive skin so it’s not harsh but still removes all the dirt really well. Right now I am using the Givenchy toner after I cleanse, it’s really good. I am in love with this toner. It’s an anti-aging toner, which is rare to find. It also feels amazing, the texture is super soft, and it leaves my skin so fresh. Toner is a step that a lot of people skip, but I think it is really important because it preps your skin to receive your moisturizer. Next I use the La Mer radiant serum. It’s outstanding, amazing, absolutely incredible—I love it! And there is a new Lancôme serum that removes dark spots and fine lines, and its ingredients are very gentle, which I also love. I usually uses Iroisie eye cream in the morning, it erases dark circles really well. Then comes the moisturizer—I am a big believer in moisturizer. I always use one even though I have combination skin. After I moisturize I use some La Roche Posay 50+ SPF. I use the fluid because it is light and not greasy like most sunscreens out there and it lasts all day.”

“I came into my job at Glamour by luck really. After college I was working as a news broadcaster but took a risk, quit my job and went to makeup school in New York. When I got back to Mexico I met our fashion editor Mauricio Valdespino and things seemed meant to be. We were talking and he told me Glamour was looking for a beauty coordinator. He went back to the Editor-in-Chief, Mar Abascal, who is my boss now, and told her about me. I had actually gone in to interview at Glamour a few years earlier and didn’t get the job–but when Mauricio said my name she remembered me. After their conversation she went through her emails and remembered that she interviewed me two years before. Mar called me for an interview and then told me to start on Monday. I came in as a beauty assistant but the Beauty Editor left three weeks after I started. Mar took a chance on me and told me that the job was mine if I wanted it. She told me that she thought I would do amazing. Obviously I was really scared but went ahead and took the promotion anyway. I will always be so grateful to Mar; she was the first person who took a chance on me. She believed in me and hopefully I haven’t disappointed her over these past years!”

“It’s funny because even though I am a makeup artist I don’t wear a lot of it. I start off with Estée Lauder double wear concealer and then I use Bare Minerals since I’m not a foundation girl. I never wear foundation; I don’t really like the way it feels. Sometimes for TV or for important photo shoots I will wear some, but in my personal life it feels like too much. I prefer a more natural look. For my blush I love MAC mineralize blush in gentle, it’s my favorite. Then I use a little bit of eye shadow, I really like one by NARS called all about eve, which Francois Nars has told me is actually his favorite eye shadow from his collection. Then I curl my eyelashes and use cover girl lash blast waterproof mascara—but just on the top lashes. Mascara is my number one makeup staple, but my eyelashes are so straight so I need an eyelash curler. MAC has an amazing brow gel that is like a brow mascara and it works like a miracle. The gel magically settles your eyebrows and adds a little bit of color, but still looks natural. My last few steps involve adding a touch of powder highlighter on my cheekbones and a lip gloss before I’m out the door.

If I have to go somewhere at night, chances are I will need to apply my makeup in a hurry. I’ll wear a little bit of eyeliner on the inside of my eyes. It sounds kind of silly but I can get a quick smoky eye really easily if I wink a few times after applying eyeliner. My favorite liner is MAC teddy. I usually add a bit of lipstick for an evening look. I’m all about schiap by NARS; it’s a rich magenta with tons of pigment. Oh I almost forgot, I love Yves Saint Laurent’s touche éclat. I always wear it at night, and put it on after my concealer. It helps to brighten everything. I can’t live without it.”

“My book Mundo Rosa just came out. This whole experience of writing a book feels a bit like I’m having a child. I always planned to write a book about beauty and it just happened that I was lucky enough to write one with two of my friends. I co-wrote Mundo Rosa with Olivia Peralta and Angie Taddei, and the whole idea to collaborate came up really casually one night. We were chatting and I mentioned how one of my big plans was to write a beauty book and then Olivia and Angie were like, “Oh my god! We’ve been wanting to write one too.” And from there things just took off. Angie and Olivia have a Mexican television show, Picnic, that deals with girl’s issues. They have an online magazine connected to the show called Mundo Rosa or “Pink Life” so the name was an obvious extension of that. It got a little hard at times because I worked full time for Glamour while writing the book, but somehow, I am still not sure how, it all worked out. The book is really amazing and stylish; it’s the little black book of beauty except it’s pink. It’s really a total beauty guide, and one of our big points is reinforcing the importance of wearing sun block. In Mexico we don’t have a sunscreen culture and as a result we have a lot of skin cancer. We wanted to give girls tools not only for how to look good but how to be healthy.”

“To take off my makeup at the end of the day I use Almay moisturizing makeup remover pads, the ones in the blue package. They somehow manage to take off all of my waterproof makeup. I like to wash my face again with the same Avene cleanser and Clarisonic, use my Givenchy toner, and my serums. I recently started to use the Lancôme firming night cream. My facialist recently told me to start using firming lotions, and that traumatized me a bit. We all age, but no one likes to hear about it! Before bed I apply a heavy-duty eye cream, rénergie lift by Lancôme and try to get a lot of beauty sleep.”
