YOU ARE A BABE

BETONY VERNON, SEXUAL ANTHROPOLOGIST

"It took me six years to create The Boudoir Bible. It’s a mission of love and pleasure and meant to be spread around. I am so fortunate to have it sold here in Paris and at the Marc Jacobs stores in New York. The book is a consequence of the bodywork I’ve been doing because I realized that we were still fairly sexually ignorant as a society. It became very evident to me that there were some basic things that people did not know about their bodies and pleasing each other, I just kept getting surprised. I think sometimes we take sex very seriously when in reality we should just be playing.

If you have a box of knowledge around sex you can play safely, and there are lots of ways to love each other. Walking around Paris the other day I noticed an Etam lingerie add where the model is flexing a crop. If you have a crop, it is a powerful tool. If you are striking someone’s body you better know how to strike or when to strike otherwise you are dangerous. You don’t go out and buy an appliance without instructions.

I’m not a creature of habit and neither is my skin; I’m always looking to find a perfect experience. I change with every season and I need to alternate my beauty routine as well. But I always love to start my day with handstands and inverted poses; they bring blood and fresh oxygen to my whole body. And even though it is considered a real ‘no no’ I like to take a hot bath. I always add something to the water either rose petals or bath salts and finish off with a cold rinse.

I’m a redhead so I have delicate skin. In the morning and evening I use my Clarisonic with Shu Uemura cleansing oil rather than soap. I love Bioderma tonic since it’s really gentle. I have issues with dry skin in the wintertime so I use organic face oils to combat dryness. I am a firm believer in going to the Hamam every week and exfoliating. It’s important to detoxify and shed your dead skin cells. I find the whole experience really centering and I love being washed by someone.

Eye makeup removal is a tricky thing, especially if you wear waterproof products. I’ve been using a solution from La Roche Posay and it is such an elegant effortless removal. In the evening I sleep in Weleda Wild Rose Night Cream a couple of times a week, I can feel it feeding my skin, otherwise I don’t sleep in any product. My skin needs to breathe at night.

In terms of makeup I am in love with the Mugler line. They make a pre-foundation that has a lot of blue in it. Being that I am a redhead, my skin has a lot of peach tones, not like my friend Dita, who is made of milk (laughs). This product really evens things out and the foundation is also amazing. That is my base ritual. During the day I don’t wear any mascara at all, I have quite fair eyelashes so if I do a bare eye and red lip it becomes an ethereal look. I love Shiseido lipsticks and of course Chanel nail polish.

I’m a natural redhead but I go slightly darker and a bit more graphic. I don’t take any color out I just enhance it. When I’m in New York, Michael Angelo at Wonderland does my color and in Paris I use Tanya Gandray. She worked with Mugler quite a bit and is my private hairdresser who comes to my home. I don’t like to go to the salon, except to see Michael Angelo of course, because he has a backroom. The whole concept of putting people in windows to hang out for three hours is not for me. In France my lady comes, she does my hair, my feet, she does everything and I adore her. I can hang out in my kimono during the whole process it’s perfect.

Everything is 360 degrees. If I wasn’t always working around the body and pleasure I think I’d go crazy. I have my jewelry work and my design work, which I’ve done forever. For the first time I am working in marble, which is incredible. I will eventually create some small pieces but at the moment I am working in a monumental scale. There is a version of my piece The Origin, which will be three meters high in the process of being finished. It is a monument to sex, and penetration and the origin of each and every one of us.”

YOU ARE A BABE

KRISTA KRETZSCHMAR, JEWELRY DESIGNER

APRIL 10.2013 by AIMEE BLAUT

"I went to Italy looking for a fashion school but ended up studying jewelry. I had always been fascinated by precious stones when I was a child and it was very close to my family. I worked with this old goldsmith in Florence who was so talented. I learned a lot but that is not the aspect that I like the most, working for other people (laughs). Afterwards I knew that I wanted to do my own brand but needed to wait for the time to be right. When I moved back to Sweden was really when I started to make my own pieces and luckily people wanted to buy them (laughs). That was the beginning of my line. Now I am doing it full time.

I don’t have special products that I use for each season. I like to keep my beauty routine pretty basic. I just gave birth a month and a half ago and had really good luck with my pregnancy. I was able to jog and take long walks throughout my whole pregnancy.  I like to move a lot but going to the gym isn’t very fun so I get my exercise outdoors.

Before taking my morning walk with my children I hop in the shower. When I get out I use L’Oreal Youth Code Luminize Day Cream as my moisturizer and the Youth Code eye cream. If I’m feeling dry I’ll put on Masque Destressant Hydration from Chanel. I wear an SPF in the summer time and just add that onto my typical routine.

I wash my hair with the Natural Redken series and let it air dry naturally. My best friend used to work at Corinne Friends but just opened her own salon, Anna Soder. She does my hair when I want to do something a little differently–she is really good.

I wear the same makeup everyday and don’t really mix it up. I like Chanel eyeliner and apply it to the inner rim of my eyes. I look more awake when I use brighter shades like blues or greens and finish it off with Lancome Hypnôse Star mascara. For a base I have Clinique Stay-Matte Powder and Guerlain Terracotta to add a touch of color.”

YOU ARE A BABE

EMMA NYBOM JOHANSSON, PARELLE.SE

MARCH 21.2013 by AIMEE BLAUT

"I’ve been working at Parelle for a few weeks now and before that I was at Cosmopolitan for six years. I started working in beauty as a makeup artist for a big agency in Sweden called MIKAs. I worked with them for five or six years--I have always been working with beauty in some kind of way. My father is a photographer so since I was a child I was working with photos.

Right now I have a new challenge because I am working to brand Parelle and make it an online glossy with a shopping experience. If you have someone styling you and giving you the world of beauty then you can get motivated and inspired. It feels like somebody has given me a whole new magazine, and that is so great, I have so much freedom. There is a big difference though between how things work in print and on the web so I need to think in entirely new terms than I am used to, which is wonderful.

I wake up at six in the morning and get up very quietly because the other people in the family are still sleeping. I run straight into the bathroom. Outside of the bathroom I keep a box with all of my makeup. We have such a tiny bathroom that there is nowhere to put it, so I just have to travel around the apartment with this box (laughs).  I am very focused on having good skin so I try to take good care of it. I use Estelle & Thild Neroli Cleansing Gel. If it’s cold and dry outside I put on Exuviance Ultra Restorative Creme. I like it because it is very fatty, so it really moisturizes my skin well. I always use my Ole Henriksen roller eye gel; you get the perfect amount of product without getting your hands sticky. My all time favorite for my lips is La Mer The Lip Balm; I couldn’t use anything else. The skin on your lips is just as sensitive as the skin around your eyes so it’s important to take care of it.

My favorite foundation right now is Chanel Perfection Lumiere. I also love the new DiorSkin Nude BB Cream. My base really depends on how I look each morning though, some days I wake up and think Oh my god! I really need something strong to roll over my whole face with. I hate when my skin is feeling dull and I haven’t slept well or have some dark circles. If I am really grey and dull I use GlamGlow, it’s the best facial mask I’ve ever tried. My face feels moisturized and glows, even my husband notices after I’ve used it.

I am always looking for the best mascara and I just found a new all time favorite, Benefit They’re Real. I love that the brush is small enough to use on my bottom lashes. DiorShow New Mascara is perfect for long flirty lashes. I use Dior lipsticks a lot because they have good coral and peach tones. MAC and MAX Factor have some amazing shades as well. My favorite blush is from Estee Lauder. You just need to use a touch of it, and the packaging is so beautiful!

At night I take it all off with Decleor eye makeup remover, its one of the best. My makeup disappears so fast and I don’t even need to make an effort. Then I use Estelle & Thild cleanser, which also takes off your makeup—so my eyes are very clean when I am done. Next I apply their Facial Oil and let it soak into my skin before layering Exuviance Evening Restorative Complexon top. In the summer I skip the oil and go for an Estee Lauder serum instead.”
