MAIL BAG: CHELSEA LEYLAND’S NYFW

New in the mail bag, Chelsea Leyland’s postcard from New York Fashion Week! Chelsea deejayed her way through the week looking beautiful and snapping pictures for The Formula. /
“At the start of fashion week I deejayed Cole Haan’s FNO event. I kept my makeup pretty basic using my favorite red lip crayon by Nars, which has the best name, Cruella.

I loved the Karen Walker show, all the girls had huge bangs that they could barely see out of; I actually really want to cut big bangs myself now. I also loved the peachy lips the girls were all rocking.

That night I slept pretty badly. So I woke up and applied a lot of Ren Active 7 Radiant Gel on my not-so-well-rested eyes. This kept me looking tiptop while I did the music for Naeem Khan’s show. Luckily it went amazingly well, but it’s pretty scary doing the music for such a big show — its definitely a major responsibility.

Before the show, I ducked backstage to wish Naeem good luck, and slip into my Naeem Khan dress.

Suno was incredible. The prints and silhouettes were beautiful as always. I had a blast dj-ing their after-party in a cool Chinatown loft.

I had to snap a picture of my shoes while en route to deejay the Monika Chaing presentation. My trick to wearing high shoes throughout fashion week is to never get a pedicure the week before. It definitely helps when they aren’t baby soft!

Later in the week I went to the Interview Magazine dinner at Milk Studios. By this point I was absolutely exhausted. Some Laura Mercier concealer under my eyes saved the day! Here I am with my friend Maryna Linchuk. And that’s a wrap. Thanks for following my New York fashion week beauty adventures!”

To kick off London Fashion Week I headed over to ASOS Headquarters to learn about their take on all things beauty...
The magazine’s beauty department is quite small, made up of Laura, her assistant Annie and the magazines associate editor, Marina, who oversees the team.

Laura showed me around their massive operation in Greater London House, and broke down how the team works. “We have a meeting with beauty buyers to discover the most exciting products for the site,” she said, “and then we come up with concepts we can translate into editorial.” The magazine also runs a variety of trend-driven beauty features, including ‘Nail Bar’ and ‘Beauty Junkie’ (insert plug: look out for my feature in the November issue!).

I was impressed by the world of ASOS and how they are able to keep their entire online operation in house–Everything from the buying, to the shooting and editing takes place in one building (albeit on several different floors).

Of course I couldn’t leave without a trip to the hair and makeup studio where models get camera ready before being shot on their catwalk just across the hall.
